Situated in the heart of the Najd region about 200km northwest of Riyadh is Ushaiger Heritage Village, a historical site that offers a glimpse of Saudi Arabians' rich past. The name means "little blonde," which was derived from a small hill that lays in the north of the village. Some locals also say that the Arabic word for red could also be used for blonde in the old days.
Bedouins first settled in the area about 1,500 years ago and thanks to its springs and olive and palm groves, the village became a popular pit stop for pilgrims crossing Makkah.
Surrounded by thick walls and massive towers, Ushaiger is organized into seven districts and has many palm trees and orchards beautifully integrated into its maze of pathways. To walk its narrow lanes is to enter a living museum, with the slow-paced and relaxed ancient way of living still hanging heavily in the air.
Walk past 400 mud houses and about 25 stunning mosques and admire this excellent example of Nadji architecture. Some of these houses, with its distinctive triangular windows and roofs, and ornately carved wooden doors, still carry the name of the family who lived there.
Today, the historical village belongs to the Tamim Tribe. The small community of residents makes use of the village's schools, shops, and places of worship.
