Located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and with its highest peak at 3100 meters above sea level, Kennedy Hill or Cerro Kennedy is a must-visit for the lovers of nature, tranquility, and the outdoors. With its altitude, visitors get an excellent view of the snowy peaks Bolívar and Colon, the entire mountainous system of the Sierra Nevada, and the bustling city of Santa Marta below. Aside from the view and the rich flora and fauna, the interesting local villages, vast coffee farms, and delicious organic coffee are what make the hours of the uphill trek totally worth it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Day 1: Santa Marta / Minca / La Tagua / Finca Santa Elena
Depart from your hotel in Santa Marta and head towards the picturesque village of Minca. Situated 650 meters above sea level, the village inhabited by about 800 people is known for its much cooler temperature than the sweltering city below. Here, you'll visit La Victoria coffee farm, one of the oldest in Colombia, and enjoy organic coffee as you learn about the process of making it. Then, venture further to the rough and unpaved road to La María farm in La Tagua village.
Start your trek for two hours to Finca Santa Elena. Located in Cerro Kennedy or Kennedy Hill at about 2200 meters above sea level, the place offers breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada, Ciénaga Grande, and the Caribbean Sea.
Day 2: Finca Santa Elena / The Peak / Santa Marta
Wake up early and witness as the sun rises over the snowy peaks of Sierra Nevada while sipping on your delicious cup of organic coffee. After breakfast, begin your 3-hour hike on private trails to The Peak, yet another eco-touristic viewpoint of Sierra Nevada situated 3,100 meters above sea level. Throughout the tour, you will have an excellent view of the mountains, mainly on the snowcapped peaks Bolívar and Colón; crossing streams and natural springs in pristine conditions.
