Tikal is one of the most fascinating and spiritually sites of Guatemala's ancient Maya Civilization. The national park of Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a protected area of over 576 square kilometers, on the edge of the "Reserva de la Biosfera Maya". Dating back to around 400 BC, Tikal was a dominant force during the Classic Maya period. It eventually succumbed to a ruinous state in the midst of the jungle, only to be rediscovered and restored in the 20th century. Today, its towering temples and monumental plazas rise through the dense jungle foliage like ancient guardians of a forgotten world.
