The Marangu Route is deemed as the most popular and easiest of the Mt. Kilimanjaro routes. This path winds through the cultivated foothills, forest, alpine moorlands, cliffs, and glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Although this is a challenging trekking journey, it is doable for a healthy individual and has a high success rate for reaching Uhuru Peak.


Ascending on the 'rooftop of Africa,' the continent's highest point at 5896 meters, is an adventure of a lifetime. Especially since, if properly paced, everyone from seasoned trekkers to first-timers can conquer the slopes.

Itinerary


Day 1 - Arusha - Mandara Hut

Meet and greet your local guide at the designated pick up location, then head towards the Marungu Gate of the Kilimanjaro National Park to start your climbing journey and continue through the rain forest to Mandara Hut. While your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural creatures, you may enjoy the gorgeous rainforest scenery and windy trails. The trail might be muddy and slippery at these lower elevations. This will take roughly 3-4 hours, but take your time because acclimatization begins at the entrance. Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut.


Day 2 - Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

Enjoy a heart breakfast before gradually ascendung to Horombo Hut through Maundi Crater. This 5-6 hour ascent takes you out of the forest and over open moorland and forest. Take a break halfway for lunch and to take in the breathtaking views of Mawenzi. Arrive late in the afternoon at the Horombo Hut, which is located beneath the beautiful Kibo Peak viewpoint. Stay at Horombo Hut for the night.


Day 3 - Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut

Continue your journey across the dwindling heathland that transitions into a moonscape as you enter the vast saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kib, where you will have a short break for lunch. When you cross this unexpectedly wide saddle, you will be able to see the summit climb up Kibo that you will begin in a few hours. DInner and overnight at Kibo Hut.


Day 4 - Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut

Wake up just after midnight to begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak following a ‘switchback’ hiking trail. You will reach Gilman’s Point at dawn to witness the beautiful sunrise on the crater rim before making your way on to the summit, Uhuru Peak. This is a five-hour trek. You will then return to Horombo Hut, where you will eat and sleep.


Day 5 - Horombo Hut - Arusha

Make your way back to the Marangu Gate, where you will receive your Summit Certificate. Then, return to Arusha, where your climbing adventure comes to an end.
